Spring Summer 2019 Pattern Trend: Floral Checks

We absolutely love it when fashion doubles up the serving. In this case, we’re talking about heritage checks and “groundbreaking” florals! This season we saw pretty florals juxtaposed against stripes that was quite a big print direction. Continuing with the geometry games, spring summer 2019 offers up a teeny-tiny deviation by introducing bold checks as the backdrop for floral clusters. As we head into the season, you’ll see a gradual change from stripes to checks, so keep a check on them (pun intended).

However not every check will make the cut. Gingham takes a backseat and lets its bolder cousin, buffalo checks, take the lead for a slightly textured appeal. We’re also going to see a lot of windowpane check prints a la Miu Miu’s spring summer 2018 line-up that gave light to this oddball pair-up. Ask us and we’ll tell you we love the retro yet modernist merger of the silhouettes, hues and prints.

At Payal Pratap, this combo was delivered in bold checks with embroidered florals and a colour palette that sings the arrival of spring and summer. Ahead, we see that black and white checks with florals are possibly going to be HUGE. Key takeaway: take monochrome checks as a foolproof base. If you’re willing to play with the colour wheel, then stir yourself towards muted checks in navy blues and pale pinks with florals in pops of bright hues. We’re also toying with pastel bases like Pantone GenZ yellow and buttercup yellow with sparsely scattered cross-stitch embroidered florals.

With this pattern direction, we promise you’ll be keeping summer and her style in check.
